I have no idea how to get this thing running. Once I plug it in, the virtual CD pops up, but thats it. When I try to run the install software for the drive, it says the autorun program cannot be found. Can someone help out? That install software is most likely for a Windows OS, do you see any.exe files, and is it a cd? You may not have all the capability for encryption from WD, but there is a very good open source alternative called truecrypt.
You might explain what the programs are for as well if needed. The smartware has caused other Linux users problems, the fix I have seen is to upgrade that; it is firmware, and can't be removed. This has to be done on a MS OS then you can hide the smartware from that update program, in order for Ubuntu to see it Last edited by wilee-nilee; January 21st, 2011 at 03:35 AM. Code: Usage: mount -V: print version mount -h: print this help mount: list mounted filesystems mount -l: idem, including volume labels So far the informational part. Next the mounting. The command is `mount -t fstype something somewhere'. Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted.
Mount -a -t -O.: mount all stuff from /etc/fstab mount device: mount device at the known place mount directory: mount known device here mount -t type dev dir: ordinary mount command Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device. Used to install the software for the EHD.
None of the.exe files will run though. I have no idea if this is relevant to this conversation, but i think it might be close. And i was curious about my situation also. I bought a western digital external and hooked it up to my ubuntu box and got nothing.
Zip zero zilch. (no cd or software came with the hd) i then hooked it up to my xp box and it read it and stated i had new hardware installed. I then unplugged from xp and replugged into my ubuntu box and suddenly ubuntu recognised the hd.
Is there a first time setup that windows performs to make the hd readable? Could i have done something such as a mount to make this readable in ubuntu the first time?
